Fcats Spot Main Page Beta 01

Description

Lucky YOU! You get to be part of the beta for my website (currently being developed, this time with more success than before). This is the main page that you will see after the flash intro plays. Due to the limitations of the technology used to save the web page as an image, you can't see the rollover effects on the nav buttons.

I need constructive criticism so that I can be a better web designer. I started this around three weeks ago, and I just got to beta ready status yesterday.

Oooo, I like! Seems a bit industrial for you, but it's a very clean design. I see a lot of potential for dynamic content as well.

One thing, though, is the colour scheme. The white on grey-with-red for the main portion of the page is cool, but the black-on-white for the content section clashes horrendously with it. You may want to consider inverting the colours for that part of the page, and for the background, use a dark grey instead of black, in a shade that contrasts with the rest of the page, but still looks grey. A thin red outline around that portion of the page would be a good idea as well.

Another thing I recommend you try is shrinking the buttons and header (but primarily the buttons). They look nice, but they're so big that they draw attention away from the rest of the page. I'd make them about half that size or less, with the text larger relative to the buttons. They'll still have a visible tiger-print background (awesome, btw), especially if you use Flash. Also, matching text links at the bottom of the content area are an excellent idea, they make navigating the site much easier, especially for people on slow computers (less time scrolling) and slow connections/no-image/no-flash browsers.

That's about all I have. I'm not sure what sort of structure you're using for this site, but if I may make a recommendation, stay away from frames or iframes. They're no longer part of standard HTML, and they're not really a good design technique to use. I recommend using PHP includes (even if you don't use any other PHP scripting, they're extremely handy) to add the static portions to every page, or design the whole thing in Flash. There's also the option to use AJAX javascript techniques to dynamically load the content portions, but that's kinda complicated, and overkill for a site like this.
